What's with the Goose?!

It’s a Nene (AKA the Hawaiian Goose) and it’s the official bird of Hawaii. If that’s not enough to put it on your list of world’s coolest birds, consider this...The Nene is the rarest goose in the world. It battled its way back from the brink of extinction in the mid 1900’s when the number of Nene dropped to around 30.

Now there are around 800 wild Nene hanging out and doing what Nene do (mostly foraging and being amorous) on The Big Island, Maui, Kaua‘i and Moloka‘i. Although the Nene is still an endangered species, it’s resilient and adapts to all sorts of terrain. They have strong toes with webbing and padding adapted to Hawaii’s wide ranging topography. Whether trekking over grass fields, large rocks or lava plains – it’s all good to the Nene.
